In a decisive move following the tragic blaze at Rajkot’s TRP Game Zone that claimed 27 lives, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has sanctioned the installation of firefighting equipment in 36 of the city’s 93 municipal schools. This initiative, greenlit by the RMC’s standing committee on Tuesday, addresses critical fire safety needs, particularly for schools with a built-up area of 500 square metres or more.
The fire at TRP Game Zone has evidently prompted a reevaluation of safety protocols, leading to the RMC’s proactive measures. The approved proposal, submitted by the Rajkot Municipal School Board, seeks to allocate Rs 54.09 lakh for the installation and upgrading of fire safety systems in the identified schools and the school board’s headquarters.
Of the 36 schools, 10 have fire safety No Objection Certificates (NOCs) that have expired, necessitating equipment upgrades to renew their certifications. These schools, having buildings taller than nine metres, were initially compliant in 2021-22 after implementing fire safety measures. However, due to some equipment becoming non-functional, an additional Rs 9 lakh worth of new equipment will be required to secure their NOCs.
The remaining 26 schools fall under new government regulations that now mandate fire NOCs. Consequently, these institutions will receive new firefighting systems. Civic officers clarified that the other 57 municipal schools do not require fire NOCs under current regulations.
The aftermath of the TRP Game Zone fire has seen a statewide crackdown on fire safety compliance in public spaces, schools, and offices. While the RMC has sealed numerous private schools for violating fire safety and building norms, no municipal school has faced closure to date.
An official from the Rajkot Municipal School Board emphasised the inherent safety advantages of many municipal school buildings, which feature ample playgrounds and spacious front and backyards, facilitating swift evacuation if necessary. The official also noted that the board has submitted applications for the required fire NOCs.
This significant financial commitment to fire safety underscores the RMC’s dedication to safeguarding its educational institutions. As the installation of these systems progresses, the community can anticipate enhanced protection for students and staff alike.
