Reliance Infrastructure is rapidly establishing itself as a major player in India’s defence aviation sector, with an ambitious ₹5,000 crore plan focused on aircraft upgrade programmes over the next decade. This strategic move positions the company as the first private firm in India to independently manage comprehensive aircraft upgrade projects, a field traditionally dominated by public sector units and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
The company has already demonstrated its capability by successfully upgrading 55 Dornier-228 aircraft in collaboration with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and US avionics specialist Genesys. Initially contracted to upgrade 37 aircraft, Reliance secured an additional order for 18 units following the successful completion of the first phase. Valued at ₹350 crore, this contract sees upgraded Dornier planes actively serving the Indian Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard.
Aircraft and helicopters in military service typically have operational lifespans of 30 to 40 years, necessitating regular modernisation to keep avionics, mission systems, and safety features current. Industry experts highlight that lifecycle investments in upgrades and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) can reach two to three times the initial acquisition cost of military platforms.Globally, the market for military aircraft and helicopter upgrades exceeds ₹5,00,000 crore annually and is expected to grow to ₹7,00,000 crore in the next seven years. India’s extensive fleet of legacy aircraft presents a significant opportunity for domestic companies as the armed forces look to modernise equipment for future warfare needs.
Reliance Infrastructure aims to expand its aircraft and helicopter upgrade capabilities by partnering with international technology firms to deliver cutting-edge solutions. Beyond Dornier aircraft, Reliance is also deeply involved in the performance-based logistics (PBL) programme for Rafale fighter jets, collaborating with France’s Thales Group. This initiative aligns with India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision to bolster self-reliance in defence manufacturing, while also tapping into a burgeoning global market. Reliance Infrastructure’s growing portfolio and demonstrated execution capabilities place it on course to become a leading private-sector participant in India’s defence aviation ecosystem.
For investors and industry stakeholders, Reliance’s aircraft upgrade strategy offers a compelling opportunity in the expanding defence manufacturing and services sector. The company’s focus on long-term partnerships and recurring revenue models signals a sustainable business approach that bridges global technology with the operational needs of India’s armed forces.
As India accelerates efforts to modernise its defence infrastructure, Reliance Infrastructure’s ₹5,000 crore flight plan is set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the country’s defence aviation landscape.
