Regulated Water Supply to Combat Maradu Crisis

As Maradu Municipality grapples with an ongoing water scarcity issue, the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has announced new measures to manage the situation more effectively. Persistent shortages in several wards, particularly wards 1, 33, 23, and 29, along with Valanthakadu Island, have necessitated a more structured approach to water distribution.

In response to the escalating concerns, KWA has initiated a controlled valve operation strategy to ensure a more equitable distribution of water resources. Starting this week, water supply to different areas of Maradu will be regulated on a rotational basis. This strategy aims to maximise the availability of water across all affected regions, addressing the disparity in water access that has plagued the municipality for months. According to KWA officials, on Tuesday, the water valve supplying the northern side of NH 85 — specifically the Kannaadikadu and Thururuthy areas — will be temporarily shut off. During this period, water will be redirected to other parts of the municipality, allowing for a more balanced distribution. Subsequently, on Thursday, the supply to the southern side of NH 85, including Maradu Kottaaram and Kettezhuthumkadavu, will also be halted to enable a similar redistribution.

This valve operation plan is expected to continue over the next few weeks, gradually normalising the water supply across Maradu. The assistant executive engineer of KWA has assured residents that this temporary measure is essential to ensure that every household receives an adequate water supply during these challenging times. The plan is not only a response to immediate needs but also a strategic move to prevent future crises by promoting efficient water management practices. Residents have voiced both hope and concern over the new measures. While some welcome the promise of a more regular water supply, others are apprehensive about the potential disruptions to their daily routines. However, KWA has committed to monitoring the situation closely and making adjustments as necessary to minimise any inconvenience.

The ongoing water scarcity in Maradu highlights a broader issue of water management and resource allocation within Kerala. As urban areas continue to grow, the demand for water has surged, often outpacing supply capabilities. The KWA’s current intervention serves as a critical reminder of the importance of sustainable water management and the need for long-term planning to support the state’s growing population. By introducing a regulated approach to water distribution, KWA aims to ensure that all residents of Maradu have access to this vital resource. As the controlled valve operation strategy unfolds, its success could set a precedent for other regions facing similar challenges.
