The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a new GIS-based software developed by its subsidiary, the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL). This cutting-edge system aims to streamline traffic flow and reduce waiting times at toll plazas across the country.
The software, which will initially monitor 100 toll plazas, is designed to provide real-time updates on crucial traffic metrics. Users will be able to access live data on queue lengths, waiting times, and vehicle speeds at these toll points. Additionally, the system offers congestion alerts and lane distribution recommendations to address vehicle backups effectively. The selection of these 100 toll plazas was informed by congestion data collected through the 1,033 National Highway helpline.
This feedback-driven approach ensures that the most congested areas receive immediate attention, with plans to extend the monitoring service to additional toll plazas in the future. The GIS-based system connects directly to NHAI’s field offices, enabling officials to perform comprehensive traffic condition analyses. By offering insights on traffic patterns hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly, the software aids in strategic planning and real-time management of toll operations. Furthermore, it includes weather updates and information on local events, such as festivals, which can significantly impact traffic flow.
For commuters, the new system promises a more efficient and less frustrating experience at toll plazas. By reducing wait times and optimising lane usage, the GIS software contributes to smoother journeys and improved road safety.
