Eastern Railway is poised to revolutionise hygiene standards on its trains by deploying an advanced Internet of Things (IoT) based technology named ‘Gandavedh’ for real-time odour detection.
This system aims to ensure cleaner and more pleasant train journeys for passengers by actively monitoring and addressing sanitation issues. The initiative will initially be trialled on three trains in the Howrah division, three in the Sealdah division, two in the Asansol division, and two in the Malda division. The Gandavedh device is engineered to detect offensive odours in train toilets, sending immediate alerts to designated personnel. These alerts will be transmitted via SMS and web-based notifications, prompting onboard housekeeping staff to promptly clean the affected toilets.
Equipped with sensors that measure malodour, total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), temperature, and humidity, the Gandavedh system activates alerts whenever these parameters exceed set thresholds. The comprehensive messages will not only indicate the problem but also include solution tips, guiding the railway staff on effective cleaning measures.
This initiative represents a significant step forward in leveraging technology for enhanced public service. By integrating IoT solutions, Eastern Railway aims to elevate passenger comfort and satisfaction. Real-time hygiene monitoring will significantly reduce instances of unpleasant odours, ensuring a more hygienic and enjoyable travel experience.
Incorporating Gandavedh into the hygiene maintenance protocol demonstrates Eastern Railway’s vision of integrating modern technological solutions to traditional challenges. This move is likely to set a new benchmark in the railway sector, potentially inspiring other divisions and zones to adopt similar measures for improved passenger amenities. As the trials progress, feedback and data collected will be crucial in refining and optimising the system for broader implementation.
“After successful trials of this system at some station toilets in the Central Railway (Mumbai zone), Eastern Railway had decided to conduct field trials of the real-time hygiene monitoring system,” an ER official said.
