Rayagada Railway Division in Odisha to be Formed, Demarcation Process Underway
The process of establishing the much-awaited Rayagada railway division in Odisha is progressing steadily as the area demarcation work continues. Railway sources indicate that once the area identification is completed, the formal notification for the new division will be issued. While the division is not yet officially announced, the ongoing work marks a significant step towards enhancing the region’s railway infrastructure.
Currently, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) zone, headquartered in Bhubaneswar, comprises three divisions: Khurda Road, Sambalpur, and Waltair. The upcoming Rayagada division will be carved out from Waltair, making it the fourth division under the ECoR zone and the 70th division in India. This new addition is set to address the growing demands of the region’s expanding railway network and provide better services to both passengers and freight sectors. A key milestone in the process was marked by the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who laid the foundation stone for the construction of a divisional railway manager (DRM) building in Rayagada. However, contrary to some media reports, the Prime Minister did not lay the foundation for the Rayagada railway division itself but for the DRM office building that will support the new division’s operations once it is established. According to a senior railway official, the Rayagada railway division is being developed along similar lines to the newly inaugurated Jammu division, which became the 69th railway division in India. After the demarcation process is completed, the Rayagada division will follow suit, with the DRM office construction set to begin soon.
The Rayagada railway division is expected to bring significant improvements to the region’s railway infrastructure, facilitating enhanced connectivity and transportation services. As the division’s boundaries are finalised, local and regional stakeholders are hopeful about the economic benefits, including job creation and better transportation for goods and passengers alike. The creation of the Rayagada railway division is a part of the Indian government’s broader vision to strengthen railway infrastructure across the country, especially in regions that have witnessed significant growth and demand for services. The upcoming division is anticipated to improve efficiency, ensure better maintenance, and streamline operations, ultimately benefitting the people of Odisha and neighbouring areas. In addition to the development of the Rayagada division, other ongoing railway infrastructure projects in Odisha, such as improvements in station facilities and expansion of railway lines, are expected to further boost the region’s connectivity and economic growth. The finalisation of the Rayagada railway division promises to be a turning point for the region’s rail network, and its successful completion will pave the way for more comprehensive and efficient services, enhancing both passenger travel and freight transport in the years ahead.
