The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), in collaboration with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), is set to embark on a major redevelopment initiative in Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar, Ghatkopar.
This ambitious project, endorsed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has recently achieved a significant milestone with the approval of housing for 14,224 families, representing over 85% of the current residents in the area. The redevelopment, part of a broader urban renewal effort, is linked to the proposed extension of the Eastern Freeway from Cheddha Nagar in Ghatkopar to Thane. This infrastructure project is expected to significantly bolster the region’s connectivity and development.
The redevelopment plan encompasses approximately 33.15 hectares and aims to rehabilitate a total of 16,575 slum dwellers, dramatically improving their living conditions. The MMRDA has allocated an estimated INR 3,200 crore for the redevelopment. The project will not only provide new housing but also create around 75 lakh square feet of commercial space, which is projected to generate revenue of approximately INR 10,000 crore. Additionally, the MMRDA will receive around 5,000 flats from the redevelopment, enhancing its housing stock and contributing further to the city’s housing supply.
The SRA has conducted a comprehensive survey over the past five months to verify the eligibility of residents. This process included meticulous documentation checks, resulting in the final list of eligible beneficiaries being released recently. Residents who have yet to submit valid documents will have an additional two months to complete the necessary requirements. This redevelopment project marks the MMRDA’s inaugural foray into slum redevelopment and underscores a significant shift in its approach to urban renewal.
The collaboration with the SRA reflects a coordinated effort to tackle urban poverty and improve living standards, showcasing the potential for integrated development strategies in transforming Mumbai’s urban landscape. The Ramabai Nagar initiative stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and addressing housing deficits, paving the way for a more organised and prosperous future for Mumbai’s residents.
