Rajasthan Witnessed IAF Jaguar Trainer Jet Crashes During Routine Sortie in Churu

Rajasthan witnessed a tragic aviation incident on Wednesday when an Indian Air Force (IAF) Jaguar trainer aircraft crashed in Churu district during a routine training sortie. The crash occurred around 1:25 pm near Bhanoda village, sending debris across an open field and drawing immediate emergency response from both local authorities and military personnel.

Eyewitnesses from the nearby rural areas reported a loud explosion followed by thick plumes of smoke billowing from the crash site. Villagers claimed the aircraft descended sharply before impact, possibly indicating a last-second attempt by the pilots to steer the jet away from populated zones. The IAF has confirmed that the aircraft involved was a twin-seat Jaguar trainer jet, which was on a standard training mission at the time. A court of inquiry has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the crash, and a technical team has been deployed to examine the wreckage.

Sadly, both personnel onboard — a trainer and a trainee — did not survive the crash. Human remains were recovered from the crash site, and authorities have sealed off the area as part of ongoing rescue and recovery operations. This marks another blow to the Jaguar fleet, which despite its reliability in earlier decades, has recently seen increasing maintenance challenges due to ageing systems. The Churu incident is the third Jaguar-related crash this year, following earlier mishaps in Ambala and Jamnagar.

Local residents described the scene as chaotic, with several units of fire, medical, and disaster response teams rushing to the site. Emergency services faced difficulty accessing the exact location due to muddy terrain and narrow village roads. Defence analysts have raised questions about the long-term viability of India’s older aircraft platforms. While modernization efforts are underway, incidents like these continue to highlight operational risks.

The Indian Air Force expressed its condolences and assured that all protocols were being followed as the investigation proceeds. Rajasthan’s state administration also extended support to the IAF and the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.
