Rajasthan launches 150-unit free solar power scheme

In a decisive move towards sustainable energy, the state government has introduced a scheme to provide 150 units of free solar power to over one crore households, replacing the previous initiative that offered 100 units of free electricity. The transition marks a significant policy shift, promoting renewable energy while reducing dependency on conventional power sources. While no official timeline has been provided for phasing out the existing scheme, the new initiative aligns with broader efforts to create self-sufficient energy solutions.

The scheme will leverage subsidies from the central government under the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, facilitating the installation of 1.1-kilowatt rooftop solar plants for eligible households. The estimated cost of each plant is set at Rs 50,000, with the central government covering Rs 33,000 through existing subsidies, while the state government will contribute the remaining Rs 17,000, ensuring no financial burden on the consumer. To finance the state’s share, power distribution companies will secure loans from financial institutions, ensuring the seamless implementation of the initiative.

A significant portion of the state’s electricity consumers—approximately 77 lakh households—currently benefitting from the Mukhyamantri Free Electricity Scheme will receive their quota of free power from community solar plants installed in phases. These solar installations, featuring a capacity of up to 1 MW along with 2 MWh of battery storage, will be strategically set up at substations to cater to clusters of nearly 5,500 consumers per unit. Government estimates suggest that setting up a single 1 MW solar plant with adequate battery backup will require an investment of approximately Rs 6.25 crore. This move is expected to not only provide clean energy but also contribute to long-term cost savings for the state’s power infrastructure.

Unlike the previous scheme, which had consumption-based benefits, the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme will extend to all households, including those outside the purview of the earlier initiative. Households consuming more than 150 units per month will have the option to install higher-capacity solar plants, availing central subsidies up to Rs 78,000. However, the state will maintain its contribution cap at Rs 17,000 per unit. Additionally, smart meters will be installed for monitoring energy consumption, with consumers bearing a nominal charge of Rs 75 per month. This structural shift is expected to empower residents with greater energy autonomy, reduce strain on the electricity grid, and foster the adoption of green energy solutions at an unprecedented scale.
