Rajasthan Expands Airport Network To Boost Connectivity
Rajasthan is preparing a major expansion of its aviation infrastructure, with the state government planning airport upgrades, new airstrips and expanded flight connectivity to support tourism, regional mobility and economic growth across the desert state.
The strategy emerged from a high-level review of civil aviation infrastructure in Jaipur, where officials examined ongoing airport development projects and identified new locations for improving regional air connectivity. The initiative reflects the state’s push to strengthen transport links in a geographically large region where long road travel times often limit access to economic and tourism hubs. Officials involved in the discussions indicated that both new greenfield airports and upgrades to existing airstrips are being explored. The objective is to expand aviation access for cities that currently rely heavily on distant airports, while also supporting tourism circuits and industrial centres that require faster passenger and cargo mobility. One of the most significant projects in the pipeline is the Kota–Bundi greenfield airport, approved by the Union government with an estimated investment of about ₹1,507 crore. The facility is expected to feature a runway capable of handling narrow-body aircraft, a modern passenger terminal and associated aviation infrastructure.
Once operational, the airport could handle up to two million passengers annually and serve as a gateway for southern Rajasthan’s industrial and education hub. The state government is also examining upgrades to multiple existing airstrips and smaller aviation facilities. Many of these sites were historically developed for military or emergency purposes and currently have limited commercial use. Reviving them could enable charter flights, regional air services and tourism-focused aviation operations in remote districts. Urban planners note that improved aviation infrastructure can reshape regional development patterns. Faster connections between emerging cities and national economic centres often attract investment in hospitality, logistics and advanced services. For tourism-driven states such as Rajasthan, better air access also reduces travel barriers for international visitors exploring heritage destinations spread across the state.
Industry analysts say the expansion aligns with India’s broader push to decentralise aviation growth beyond major metropolitan airports. Government programmes promoting regional connectivity have encouraged states to identify smaller cities where aviation can unlock economic potential, particularly in areas linked to tourism, manufacturing and education clusters. In Rajasthan, aviation infrastructure is increasingly viewed as part of a wider economic development framework that integrates transport networks with tourism corridors, urban expansion and industrial growth. Cities such as Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur already serve as key air gateways, but expanding capacity in smaller urban centres could distribute economic benefits more evenly across the state.
Officials say future planning will focus not only on constructing airports but also on ensuring supporting infrastructure such as roads, logistics facilities and urban services develops around these aviation nodes. As Rajasthan continues to position itself as a major tourism and investment destination, the expansion of airport and airstrip infrastructure could play a critical role in connecting the state’s historic cities and emerging economic clusters to national and global markets.
