Seven urban local bodies (ULBs) across Chhattisgarh are set to receive prestigious national honours for their exemplary performance in cleanliness parameters under Swachh Survekshan 2024. This significant recognition, to be presented by President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on July 17, underscores Chhattisgarh’s deepening commitment to fostering eco-friendly, sustainable, and equitable urban environments. The accolades highlight a concerted effort by civic administrations and citizens alike to enhance public health and improve the quality of life through robust waste management and sanitation initiatives.
The selections span various population categories, reflecting comprehensive improvements across the state. Bilaspur Municipal Corporation has earned distinction in the ‘Big Cities’ category, encompassing populations between 3 lakh and 10 lakh, while Kumhari Municipality secured recognition in the ‘Small Cities’ segment, for populations ranging from 20,000 to 50,000. Further reinforcing the state’s widespread dedication to cleanliness, Bilha Nagar Panchayat was honoured in the ‘Very Small Cities’ category, for populations below 20,000. These awards are a testament to the meticulous planning and execution of sanitation programmes, which are fundamental to creating liveable and inclusive urban spaces for all residents.
In a notable achievement, Raipur Municipal Corporation will receive the Ministerial Award from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for its outstanding contributions to cleanliness at the state level. This recognition acknowledges Raipur’s leadership in implementing innovative waste management strategies and promoting citizen participation, crucial elements in the journey towards zero net carbon cities. Effective waste segregation, processing, and recycling reduce landfill burden and methane emissions, directly contributing to a healthier planetary footprint.
Adding a new dimension to this year’s honours, the ‘Super Swachhata League’ (SSL) category, introduced by Swachh Survekshan, recognised three more Chhattisgarh ULBs. Ambikapur Municipal Corporation was selected in the category for cities with populations between 50,000 and 3 lakh, while Patan Nagar Panchayat and Bishrampur Nagar Panchayat were lauded in the category for cities with populations below 20,000. These ULBs have consistently ranked among the top performers, demonstrating sustained excellence in urban sanitation over the past three years. Such consistent performance is vital for building resilient urban infrastructure and fostering a sense of collective responsibility towards public hygiene.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao extended their heartfelt congratulations to all seven award-winning ULBs, expressing immense pride for the state. Chief Minister Sai affirmed that Chhattisgarh is steadfast in its resolve to remain a frontrunner in the nation’s cleanliness movement. This dedication to urban cleanliness translates directly into tangible benefits for citizens, including reduced incidence of disease, improved public aesthetics, and enhanced overall well-being, paving the way for truly sustainable and gender-neutral cities where every individual can thrive.
