Three railway stations in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur Division Urkura, Bhilai, and Bhanupratappur have undergone transformative redevelopment under Indian Railways’ ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
Equipped with eco-friendly design, inclusive amenities, and advanced security features, the upgraded stations are now set to offer a more comfortable and accessible travel experience to passengers across central India. The redevelopment aims to bridge infrastructure gaps in Tier-2 and Tier-3 urban centres by integrating sustainability with smart design, providing passengers with stations that reflect both efficiency and equity. The initiative not only caters to increasing passenger demand but also aligns with broader goals of creating carbon-conscious and gender-sensitive civic spaces.
Each of the redeveloped stations now boasts a modern architectural facade, smart parking zones, energy-efficient lighting, and a focus on accessibility for all. Dedicated parking areas for two-wheelers and four-wheelers with paved surfaces have been introduced to streamline traffic management and enhance commuter convenience. Real-time surveillance through IP-based CCTV systems has been deployed to bolster safety. The stations now feature digital booking counters and Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs), helping reduce queues and human dependency while ensuring seamless ticketing access for general and Divyangjan passengers. All ticket counters have been retrofitted with dual-height platforms to support those with disabilities, an important step toward inclusive transit design.
To further improve commuter comfort, water booths equipped with accessibility-friendly taps and coolers have been installed. A designated Akshita Bubble area has also been created to offer privacy and comfort to women passengers—signalling Indian Railways’ growing focus on gender-inclusive infrastructure. Green construction methods and materials were prioritised throughout the upgrades. Eco-sensitive design elements and sustainability-led planning ensure that the stations reduce their environmental footprint. The initiative supports long-term climate goals while delivering short-term gains in passenger convenience.
Beyond its infrastructural improvements, the redevelopment project is expected to serve as a catalyst for economic activity in Raipur and the surrounding region. With areas earmarked for future commercial development, the stations are envisioned not just as transit hubs but as anchors for local commerce and urban growth. The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, under which these redevelopments were executed, is geared towards modernising 1,300 railway stations across the country. The scheme’s goal is to not only upgrade facilities but also ensure regional development through connectivity and accessibility.
These developments reaffirm Indian Railways’ pivot toward people-first infrastructure—modern, sustainable, and responsive to the diverse needs of India’s population. With projects like these, Indian Railways continues to demonstrate how public infrastructure can be both functional and transformational, paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable urban future.
