Rain Havoc Hits Hyderabad City Faces Traffic Chaos and Waterlogging

HYDERABAD: Torrential rains swept through several parts of Hyderabad on Sunday evening, particularly impacting south Hyderabad and causing significant disruptions to traffic and daily life. Wind speeds surged up to 60 kilometres per hour, driving down the minimum temperature to a pleasant 24.6°C.

Areas within the city limits witnessed substantial rainfall, with Malakpet and Karvan recording the highest at 70mm, followed closely by Goshamahal at 63.3mm and Malakpet at 57.3mm. The intense downpour resulted in widespread waterlogging across Hyderabad, prompting traffic police to manage slow-moving vehicular flow. Prompt response teams from the disaster management force swiftly addressed multiple complaints, including the clearance of fallen trees obstructing roads.

The impact of the rains extended to various neighbourhoods including Goshamahal, Asif Nagar, Nallakunta, Amberpet, Panjagutta, Saifabad, Sultan Bazar, and Falaknuma, where heavy traffic snarls and waterlogged streets exacerbated commuting challenges. Similar heavy rainfall was reported in other parts of Telangana, with Kasipet in Mancherial district receiving 66mm and Lingapur in Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district recording 54.5mm. Meteorological forecasts indicate continued heavy rainfall across multiple districts on Monday, spanning Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal Malkajigiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba Gadwal. The unexpected intensity of the rain underscores the need for enhanced urban infrastructure resilience against weather extremes, emphasizing drainage systems and emergency response capabilities. As Hyderabad navigates these weather challenges, authorities are urged to prioritize swift action and proactive measures to mitigate the impact on public safety and city operations.
