Rain and Thunderstorms Expected in Mumbai Today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai today, predicting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h at isolated locations.

This alert comes as part of a broader weather pattern affecting various parts of Maharashtra, with several districts under orange alerts due to anticipated heavy pre-monsoon showers. The recent weather developments have brought a significant change to Mumbai’s climate, providing relief from the intense heat experienced earlier this month. The Santacruz observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 25.8°C and a maximum of 34.6°C, while Colaba noted temperatures ranging from 26.8°C to 33.4°C. These temperatures mark a noticeable drop, attributed to the onset of pre-monsoon activities in the region

Meteorological experts attribute the current weather conditions to westerly winds bringing moisture-laden air over the city, leading to increased humidity and cloud formation. This phenomenon is typical during the pre-monsoon period and often results in sudden thunderstorms and rainfall. The IMD has indicated that while these showers provide temporary relief, the accompanying humidity levels remain high, characteristic of Mumbai’s seasonal weather. Beyond Mumbai, the IMD has issued orange alerts for several districts, including Pune, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Solapur, Satara, Kolhapur, and Beed. These regions are expected to experience heavy pre-monsoon rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The Vidarbha region is also on alert for similar weather conditions.

In Pune, light rainfall is anticipated to continue until May 16, with daytime temperatures expected to drop by approximately 4°C, ranging between 32°C and 34°C. These changes are linked to upper air circulations over Madhya Pradesh and a trough extending from the East Central Arabian Sea to Northern Chhattisgarh. The IMD has also announced that the southwest monsoon is expected to arrive nearly a week earlier than usual in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, likely by May 13. This early onset may influence weather patterns across the country, although it is not yet clear if Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra will experience an early monsoon

Residents are advised to stay informed about the latest weather updates and exercise caution during this period of unpredictable weather. The IMD continues to monitor the situation and will provide further advisories as necessary.
