Indian Railways is set to mark a major milestone in national connectivity with the launch of a new Rajdhani Express on 13 September, the first such addition in six years. The service will directly link Sairang in Mizoram with Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi, placing Mizoram firmly on India’s premier high-speed passenger rail network.
The inaugural journey will begin as a special service on 13 September from Sairang, arriving in Delhi two days later. From 19 September onwards, the train will operate weekly under the designation of the Sairang–Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express. Officials confirmed that this addition will reduce travel time between the Northeast and Delhi while offering passengers enhanced comfort with fully air-conditioned coaches, onboard catering and other modern amenities. The Rajdhani Express route will cover major stations including Guwahati, New Jalpaiguri, Malda Town, Patna Junction and Kanpur Central before reaching the capital. By connecting Mizoram directly to northern and central India, the service is expected to open new avenues for tourism, trade and cultural integration. According to railway experts, Sairang, located close to Aizawl, is likely to emerge as a critical hub for long-distance train services in the state.
Until now, travellers from Mizoram have relied largely on road links to reach Assam for train connections to other regions. The introduction of this new service is therefore being seen as transformative, cutting down on long and inconvenient journeys and making rail travel a viable option for thousands of passengers. Officials also highlighted the wider implications of the launch, stressing that improved connectivity to the Northeast has been a long-standing national priority. With Rajdhani Express now reaching Mizoram, the state joins Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh in gaining access to India’s flagship train service. The move signals both economic promise and an important symbolic gesture of inclusion for the region.
The last time Indian Railways launched a new Rajdhani Express was in 2019. Since then, focus has been on modernisation, electrification and expansion of existing routes. The introduction of the Sairang–Delhi Rajdhani marks a revival of efforts to expand India’s premium services into new geographies. Experts believe this will not only enhance mobility but also align with national goals of balanced regional growth and sustainable transport. By extending high-speed rail to Mizoram, Indian Railways is reinforcing its vision of equitable development and eco-friendly connectivity. The train’s all-electric, fully air-conditioned composition is designed to reduce dependence on polluting alternatives such as long-haul buses and private vehicles, offering a cleaner, faster and more inclusive mode of travel.
The launch on 13 September is expected to be widely celebrated in Mizoram, with civic and transport authorities preparing to welcome the state’s first Rajdhani Express. Beyond its operational significance, the service represents a symbolic step towards bridging the physical and cultural distance between the Northeast and the heart of India.
