Railways Sanctions Rs 344 Crore For Ranchi CKP Flyover Project

The Indian Railways has sanctioned a major infrastructure initiative to decongest one of its busiest corridors, allocating ₹343.97 crore for the construction of a 10.6-kilometre bypass line with an integrated rail flyover from Gundabihar to Chandil, under the South Eastern Railway zone. The project is aimed at removing operational bottlenecks on the Ranchi–Chakradharpur (CKP) section, ensuring seamless connectivity with the adjoining Adra line while also preparing for surging passenger and freight demands.

The proposed bypass and flyover will be strategically constructed at Chandil station, a critical junction where trains from Gundabihar currently face routine delays due to surface crossings and limited track capacity. Officials confirmed that the planned rail flyover will eliminate these delays, offering uninterrupted passage and greatly enhancing train punctuality and service reliability. Presently, both up and down trains between Chandil and Nimdih frequently encounter congestion, leading to operational delays that cascade across the network. The new infrastructure, once commissioned, will enable direct linkage between the Chakradharpur–Adra and Chakradharpur–Ranchi corridors, bypassing the bottlenecked ground-level crossings and facilitating smoother operations for both express and goods trains.

According to railway officials, the bypass line with elevated tracks will also integrate with the previously sanctioned third and fourth line expansion works, creating a resilient and capacity-rich rail network. This holistic development is expected to handle the projected doubling of freight and passenger traffic in the region over the next decade, a forecast supported by long-term economic activity in Jharkhand and neighbouring states. Industry experts believe that the flyover will play a pivotal role in enabling India’s broader vision of shifting more cargo to greener rail transport, reducing road congestion, emissions, and carbon footprints. By enabling faster train movement and higher throughput, the project not only supports economic logistics but also aligns with goals for sustainable and low-emission transport infrastructure.

While the project is still in its early stages, the sanctioned budget ensures timely commencement of civil works, with completion expected within the next few years. Once operational, the bypass is expected to unlock efficiencies in schedule planning, route capacity, and operational fluidity across the South Eastern Railway zone. For the industrial hinterland of Jharkhand and its surrounding mineral belt, this development signals a strategic investment in railway capacity that balances economic priorities with environmental responsibility. With climate-resilient design and improved traffic management at its core, the Ranchi–Chakradharpur flyover initiative reflects a forward-looking infrastructure model for India’s growing rail ambitions.
