Railways Enforce Mandatory ID Cards for Vendors at Stations and Onboard Trains
Indian Railways has initiated a pivotal shift in its operational protocols by mandating standardised identification cards for all authorised vendors operating within its vast network of trains and stations. This significant directive, effective immediately across all railway zones, directly addresses mounting concerns over unauthorised vending, which often poses tangible health risks to millions of daily commuters through the sale of unverified food products. The introduction of a uniform ID card format is a direct response to a growing issue that impacts operational integrity and passenger well-being. The new directive stipulates that every authorised vendor, helper, and staff member employed by licensed firms must carry an official identity card issued by the respective Railway Administration or the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
These standardised identity cards are designed to be comprehensive, featuring crucial details such as the vendor’s name, Aadhaar number, medical fitness certification with its validity, their deployment unit, and the date of police verification alongside its validity period. Furthermore, the name of the employing licensee firm will be prominently displayed. This level of detail aims to create an unimpeachable audit trail for every individual engaged in catering and related services, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards that are paramount for a sustainable public transport ecosystem.
To maintain the utmost operational transparency and security, the new mandate specifies that these identity cards must be signed by either the Station Superintendent or Station Manager, or by an authorised IRCTC official, following a stringent verification process. Additionally, a provision for issuing cards to a designated number of reserve vendors ensures uninterrupted service delivery, even in cases of staff absence or emergencies.
