Rail Connectivity Enhances Kashmirs Fruit Trade

The inaugural cherry cargo train is set to depart from Jammu on June 3, marking a new era in the transportation of perishable produce from the region.

This initiative aims to provide a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to air freight, which has traditionally been the primary mode of transport for Kashmiri cherries. The Jammu railway division has arranged for a refrigerated parcel van to transport 24 tonnes of cherries from Katra to Mumbai. The journey is expected to take approximately 30 hours, ensuring the delicate fruit maintains its freshness upon arrival. This service is particularly timely, coinciding with the peak cherry harvesting season in Kashmir, which typically spans from mid-May to early July. Kashmir produces between 12,000 and 14,000 metric tonnes of cherries annually, with Mumbai being a primary market for these exports. However, the high cost of air transport has often limited access to distant markets, especially for small and marginal farmers.

The introduction of rail transport is expected to reduce post-harvest losses and improve earnings for growers by providing a more affordable and reliable means of distribution. The new rail service aligns with broader efforts to enhance infrastructure and market access for Kashmir’s agricultural products. The integration of refrigerated rail transport into the supply chain is a step towards modernising the logistics framework, ensuring that perishable goods can reach consumers in optimal condition.

While this development is a positive stride for the region’s agricultural sector, challenges remain. The government continues to focus on improving infrastructure and providing support to farmers to maximise the benefits of this new transport option. As the first cherry cargo train prepares to embark on its journey, it symbolises a promising future for Kashmir’s horticulture industry, offering new opportunities for growth and sustainability.
