The Indian government has sanctioned significant railway projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and improving rail infrastructure in Maharashtra. One of the key projects includes the doubling of the 248-km-long Daund-Manmad railway line, which will significantly reduce travel time and improve connectivity between Pune and Nashik. While 178 km of the track has already been commissioned, work on the remaining section is currently underway. The project is expected to greatly benefit commuters, easing congestion on the existing routes and supporting the region’s growing transportation needs.
In addition to the Daund-Manmad project, the Railway Ministry has approved the surveys for three new railway projects. These include the construction of a double line between Nashik and Sainagar Shirdi (82 km), and between Pune and Ahmednagar (125 km). Furthermore, the doubling of the Sainagar Shirdi-Puntamba section (17 km) will further enhance the capacity and efficiency of the rail network in the region. The Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for these projects will be developed once the surveys are completed. These expansions are part of the broader efforts to modernize and improve India’s railway infrastructure, which is key to driving economic growth and improving transportation for millions.
However, not all plans for improved rail connectivity have been straightforward. A proposed direct rail connection between Pune and Nashik, developed by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (MRIDC), ran into complications due to its potential impact on the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) Observatory in Narayangaon, operated by the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics. This scientific installation, which is vital for global research, would have been affected by the proposed rail alignment, making it unsuitable. Despite this setback, the government is committed to improving rail connectivity between Pune and Nashik and other important regions in Maharashtra. These projects, while undergoing meticulous planning, are expected to transform the railway experience for passengers and contribute to regional development.
