PWD Collaborates to Provide Restroom Facilities Along State Highways for Better Travel Experience
In a significant move to improve highway travel in the state, the Public Works Department (PWD) has launched an ambitious project to construct 350-400 wayside hubs along the state’s vast road network. These hubs will consist of modern restrooms and eateries, strategically located 30-40 kilometres apart on roads under the department’s jurisdiction. The initiative is aimed at addressing the ongoing issue of limited restroom facilities along highways, a problem that has long been a source of discomfort for travellers, particularly women. By collaborating with private agencies, the PWD hopes to offer accessible and well-maintained services across key locations.
The project will see construction work commence at selected locations, while others are still in the final stages of approval. The PWD has identified crucial spots across districts where the absence of such amenities has been most felt. These restrooms and rest areas will not only serve as essential stops for weary travellers but will also play a role in ensuring the safety and comfort of those embarking on long highway journeys. The department’s collaboration with private contractors will ensure that these facilities are maintained in optimal condition, with service agreements tailored to ensure consistency in quality.

According to Puja Khatri, a regular biker, the construction of these restrooms, especially along remote highway stretches, will greatly benefit women travellers who often face challenges in locating safe and hygienic facilities. While the road network continues to expand rapidly, the government’s focus on ensuring that essential infrastructure keeps pace with development is crucial. “The addition of such amenities is a welcome change,” she added, highlighting the positive impact it would have on the overall safety and convenience of travellers. With more than 8-10 such amenities planned per district, the initiative will cover all major routes, ensuring that the gaps in roadside infrastructure are effectively addressed.
