Punes SPPU Flyover to Improve Connectivity and Reduce Congestion

The much-anticipated double-decker flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Chowk is nearing completion, promising significant relief to commuters grappling with chronic traffic congestion.

Developed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), the project is slated to open by the end of June 2025, according to official sources. The flyover is designed as a two-tier structure, with the upper deck dedicated to the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro corridor and the lower deck facilitating vehicular traffic. This integration aims to streamline the flow of both public transport and private vehicles, addressing the persistent bottlenecks at critical junctions such as Ganeshkhind Road, Senapati Bapat Road, Baner, Aundh, Pashan, and the bustling University Circle.

As of mid-May, all 32 supporting pillars have been installed, and the placement of large steel girders each measuring up to 55 metres in length and 20 metres in width is underway. While the Aundh and Shivajinagar ramps are expected to be operational by May 20, the Pashan-side ramps are anticipated to take several more months to complete due to ongoing construction and land acquisition challenges . The project’s timeline has experienced delays, initially scheduled for completion by May 2025. However, issues related to land acquisition and road widening have pushed the expected opening to June. Despite these setbacks, the phased opening of the flyover is a welcome development for Punekars who have endured significant traffic snarls during the construction phase.

This flyover is a crucial component of Pune’s broader transportation vision, which seeks to integrate metro rail lines with future public transit options, including Bus Rapid Transit Systems (BRTS). The project also prioritises pedestrian access, aiming to enhance overall connectivity and promote sustainable urban mobility. In summary, the nearing completion of the SPPU Chowk double-decker flyover marks a significant milestone in Pune’s infrastructure development. Once operational, it is poised to alleviate traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and contribute to the city’s sustainable transport goals.
