Pune’s Riverfront Project to Open in June

Pune’s ambitious Riverfront Development Project is on track to open the Sangamwadi to Bund Garden stretch (Stretch 9) by June, with 80% of the work already completed. This milestone marks significant progress in the city’s efforts to beautify and transform the Mula-Mutha riverbanks into a vibrant urban space.

The ₹5,000-crore project, approved in 2018, is inspired by Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront and aims to enhance the city’s riverfront with recreational spaces, improved urban infrastructure, and better accessibility. As part of the project, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been working on 11 phases, with Stretch 9 being one of the key segments. In a recent development, the Defence Estate Department transferred 17 acres of land near Sangamwadi crematorium and Sadalbaba Dargah, enabling the PMC to expedite the remaining work.

With this land in hand, officials have assured that the final 20% of the work will be completed swiftly. In addition to the Sangamwadi to Bund Garden stretch, the PMC has also initiated work on the Wakad to Sangvi Bridge stretch in Pimpri-Chinchwad, covering the Mula River. Tenders worth ₹297 crore have been issued for this segment, while separate tenders for other phases have also been announced.
The PMC allocated ₹270 crore for the Riverfront Development Project in its 2025-26 budget, ensuring continued momentum towards completion. The civic body remains confident that the project will meet its June deadline, bringing improved riverfront access to Pune’s residents.Once completed, the riverfront will provide enhanced recreational spaces, boosting the city’s appeal and contributing to a sustainable urban ecosystem.
