Pune’s Markal’s Crumbling Roads Threaten Industrial Growth and Lives

The 11km stretch from Alandi to Lonikand Phata through Pune’s Markal industrial belt has become a symbol of civic neglect, riddled with potholes that disrupt lives and operations alike. This vital route, frequented daily by industrial vehicles from Bhosari, Chakan, and Ranjangaon, has not only led to severe traffic congestion but has also caused multiple fatal accidents over the years. Commuters, particularly industrial workers enduring long shifts, face a gruelling two-hour journey during peak hours, severely affecting productivity in the area.

Activists and industry leaders blame the state public works department (PWD) for failing to address the deteriorating road condition over the past decade. “The PWD has spent crores on substandard repairs, offering only temporary relief. Industrial pockets in Markal and Solu generate significant revenue, yet basic infrastructure remains neglected,” noted the deputy sarpanch of Charoli village. The PWD recently allocated ₹35 crore for this stretch, but repair deadlines remain unspecified, raising concerns over its execution and quality.

From a sustainability perspective, neglecting infrastructure maintenance undermines long-term growth and environmental stability. Poor road conditions lead to increased vehicle emissions due to prolonged congestion, further aggravating air quality issues. Markal’s industries, which are pivotal to Pune’s economic ecosystem, require robust infrastructure to attract investment and ensure sustainable urban development. The current state risks deterring future industrial establishments in the area.

The human cost of this negligence is staggering. Hundreds of workers, after gruelling 8 to 12-hour shifts, must endure hazardous commutes daily. Several fatal accidents underscore the urgency for swift action. Residents and industry representatives have called for immediate, durable solutions, urging the PWD to prioritise the project and deliver on its ₹35 crore commitment. The need for robust infrastructure is no longer a luxury but a necessity to sustain Markal’s economic and human potential.
