Punes Eastern Corridor Set for Major Upgrade with ₹6500 Crore Road Project

A long-awaited infrastructure breakthrough is finally taking shape in Pune with the state government’s approval of a ₹6,500 crore highway project that promises to transform traffic flow across the Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur corridor.

The decision marks a significant pivot in the city’s infrastructure planning, especially for residents of Maval, Khed, and Shirur who have spent years grappling with chronic congestion, air pollution, and inefficient commuting along National Highway 548D. The strategic project encompasses a 25-kilometre elevated four-lane highway between Talegaon and Chakan and a six-lane surface road from Chakan to Shikrapur. This corridor, plagued by bottlenecks and industrial transport delays, is a critical industrial artery connecting Pune’s manufacturing hubs to broader logistics networks. With this approval, ground execution is expected to begin imminently, bringing long-standing policy talk closer to public impact. The elevated stretch alone accounts for nearly the entire sanctioned investment, revealing the scale of intervention required to bring seamless vehicular movement to this stretch.

Years of bureaucratic inertia had held up the project, even though a detailed project report had been finalised earlier. Delays in land acquisition, bid processing, and jurisdictional overlap had kept this ambitious upgrade on hold. However, with about ₹410 crore already allocated for land-related proceedings and ownership of the highway officially shifted from the central to the state government last year, procedural hurdles have now been addressed. The implementation will be steered by the newly formed Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation under the Build-Operate-Transfer model, enabling private players to invest upfront and recover costs over a concessional period.

This road will do more than ease travel—it will address a fundamental issue facing urban India: the urgent need to decongest cities through intelligent and sustainable infrastructure investments. Currently, this stretch of NH-548D endures not just long queues of idling vehicles but also heightened levels of particulate pollution and safety risks. Easing this traffic means lowering emissions, ensuring quicker freight turnaround, and improving public health outcomes for thousands of daily commuters and roadside dwellers. As Maharashtra commits itself to infrastructure development that aligns with broader sustainability goals, the Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur highway could emerge as a model for integrated, future-ready road systems.

For Pune, a city straining under rapid urbanisation and industrial expansion, this greenlit project signals a shift toward proactive governance. It reflects a responsive approach to civic needs and economic priorities without compromising environmental sensibilities. As India eyes net-zero targets and green logistics corridors, such intra-state connectivity interventions are not just developmental—they’re essential. The highway’s success will depend on timely implementation, environmental safeguards, and robust coordination among civic agencies. But for now, this approval is being welcomed as a long-overdue promise finally kept.
