Pune’s Double-Decker Flyover on expect on Year-End Completion

The construction of the double-decker flyover connecting Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk to E-square junction for the third Metro line is progressing well, with completion expected by the end of November or December. This ambitious project, spearheaded by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), is set to significantly enhance traffic flow and connectivity in the area.

During a recent site visit, the PMRDA Commissioner reviewed the progress of the third Metro line, emphasising the importance of adhering to the project timelines. The double-decker design, spanning 1.7 kilometres, is poised to optimise space and traffic management along one of Pune’s busiest routes. The project is being executed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model by Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, reflecting a collaborative approach to urban infrastructure development.                                       Chief Engineer of the project has reported the deployment of two additional launching girders at the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SSPU) flyover to expedite construction. This includes crucial ramp work which is essential for the flyover’s overall structural integrity. Significant progress has been made on Ganeshkhind Road at E-square and on Aundh Road, with the RCC deck slab in one span of the Aundh ramp already cast. Plans are in place to cast two additional spans on the Aundh ramp and one span on Ganeshkhind Road within the week.                                                                                                            Despite these advancements, the ongoing construction has led to considerable traffic congestion, particularly during peak morning and evening hours. Commuters have expressed frustration over the lack of effective alternative routes or arrangements during the construction period. One resident, who frequently travels from the city to the IT hub, highlighted the inconvenience caused by road closures, despite the availability of alternative routes. The heavy traffic in the area continues to be a significant challenge, underscoring the need for improved traffic management solutions during construction.

The successful completion of this flyover will mark a significant milestone in Pune’s infrastructure development, paving the way for more such projects that aim to improve the city’s transport network. As the year-end deadline approaches, the focus remains on maintaining the momentum and overcoming any hurdles to deliver a project that promises to transform the commuting experience in Pune.
