Pune Wakad Sees Rise In Open-Air Drinking Citizens Told Call 112

Pune’s Wakad area has recently witnessed a resurgence of public alcohol consumption, prompting local authorities and community leaders to call for active citizen participation. With incidents being reported in open spaces and near residential complexes, police have urged residents to promptly report violations by calling the national emergency helpline number, 112, to ensure timely intervention.

According to senior police officials, regular patrolling is ongoing, but public vigilance remains critical. “Our beat teams respond wherever incidents are observed,” said a police officer. “However, if a situation is missed, citizens can inform us via 112, allowing immediate action and prevention of recurring violations.” Another officer highlighted that patrolling alone cannot cover all areas effectively, emphasising the importance of community partnership in sustaining safe and orderly public spaces. The issue was recently brought to attention when a resident activist filed a complaint regarding public drinking in Wakad. Prompt police response underlined the system’s capacity to address such concerns, but also raised questions among citizens about their role in enforcing public order. Community leaders, including representatives from local housing society federations, have supported the police call for public engagement. They highlighted certain practices, such as the sale of alcohol in disposable glasses or pouches, which inadvertently encourage outdoor drinking near residential areas.

From a legal perspective, officers from the Excise Duty wing clarified that selling alcohol in plastic disposables or small pouches is prohibited. Enforcement teams have taken action at multiple locations where violations were detected. “We are committed to ensuring compliance with regulations and will continue to monitor problem areas closely,” said a senior excise officer. Officials emphasised that citizen reporting is a safe and effective mechanism for enforcement. Rather than confronting offenders directly, residents are advised to use the 112 emergency line, which ensures that complaints are logged and dispatched to the nearest patrol unit. This approach not only reduces personal risk but also strengthens the collective effort to maintain public safety.

Urban planners and law enforcement experts noted that tackling open-air drinking requires a combination of regulatory enforcement, public awareness, and infrastructure planning. Designated public spaces, clear signage, and accessible reporting channels can help discourage violations while fostering a culture of accountability among residents. Ultimately, authorities hope that active citizen participation will complement police efforts, creating safer, more inclusive, and equitable urban spaces. Sustained collaboration between law enforcement and the community is expected to reduce nuisance behaviours and enhance the quality of life for all residents in Wakad and surrounding neighbourhoods.
