Pune Urges Fast Completion Of Khopoli Kusgaon Missing Link
Pune commuters are pressing authorities to accelerate the Khopoli–Kusgaon missing link project on the Pune–Mumbai Expressway, citing repeated delays and daily travel inconveniences. Officials highlighted that the project, now 90 per cent complete, is critical for improving safety, reducing travel time, and easing congestion on one of India’s busiest expressways.
During a recent review by the Legislative Assembly’s Public Undertakings Committee, officials confirmed that the ₹6,600-crore project is on track for a December completion. Committee members inspected the construction, including the cable-stayed bridge rising 180 metres above Khandala valley, and lauded engineers for maintaining progress despite challenging terrain and weather conditions.
The 13-km missing link is expected to cut the Mumbai–Pune distance by 5.7 km and reduce travel time by approximately 30 minutes. Once operational, vehicles can maintain speeds of up to 120 kmph, significantly improving commuter efficiency and transport logistics. The alignment includes a series of tunnels and viaducts, with one tunnel extending 9 km and a bridge reaching 185 metres in height, both among the largest of their kind in India.
Officials emphasised that the missing link is designed with modern safety and environmental standards in mind. “The project aims to transform the expressway into a zero-fatality corridor and minimise disruptions caused by monsoon-related debris,” said a senior transport official. Measures include reinforced slopes, improved drainage, and eco-sensitive construction methods to ensure minimal environmental impact on the Western Ghats. Commuters have expressed relief that the project is nearing completion. Regular travellers highlighted how the delays have increased travel stress and operational costs for businesses. The new alignment is expected to benefit long-distance logistics, tourism, and local industries along the corridor.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) noted that while the tunnels and first viaduct were completed earlier this year, the second viaduct spanning the valley remains the most technically challenging section. Experts say the project reflects a blend of engineering innovation and sustainable infrastructure planning, ensuring structural resilience while preserving the ecological balance of the region. Once complete, the Khopoli–Kusgaon link is set to redefine commuting standards between Mumbai and Pune, offering a faster, safer, and environmentally conscious alternative for thousands of daily travellers. Authorities are committed to adhering to the December timeline while maintaining stringent quality controls.
