Pune Urban Revamp Includes 24/7 Water Supply and Road Expansion

Pune’s urban landscape is poised for significant transformation with key infrastructure projects set to reshape the city’s future.

The much-awaited 24/7 water supply initiative and the expansion of the Katraj-Kondhwa road are expected to be completed soon, addressing long-standing civic issues and laying the foundation for sustainable urban development. These developments were highlighted in a recent Legislative Council session, where pressing issues such as water scarcity, illegal constructions, and unauthorized plotting were discussed. A meeting with relevant stakeholders, including municipal officials and traffic authorities, is scheduled to take place within the week to finalise the plans. The 24/7 water supply project is a landmark initiative aimed at providing equitable access to clean water across Pune. This move comes in response to growing concerns over water scarcity, particularly in suburban areas where residents have long faced inconsistent water supply despite paying taxes. An official from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) noted that the city’s rapid urbanization has strained existing water infrastructure. “The goal is to ensure that every household, regardless of its location, receives uninterrupted water supply. This is crucial for both daily living and for supporting Pune’s ambitions as a smart city,” the official stated.

The project aligns with Pune’s broader sustainability goals, promoting water conservation and reducing the environmental footprint associated with water supply disruptions. By integrating advanced water management technologies, the city aims to achieve efficient resource allocation and minimise wastage. Another critical development is the expansion of the Katraj-Kondhwa road, a vital artery for Pune’s growing population. Despite ₹280 crore allocated for the project, progress has been slower than expected. However, the Legislative Council session brought renewed focus on the urgency of completing this road to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity. “The road expansion will not only reduce travel time but also support economic activities in the region. It’s a step towards making Pune more accessible and reducing the environmental impact of traffic congestion,” said a senior civic official. The project is designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating eco-friendly construction practices and ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding environment. Green spaces along the road are also part of the plan, contributing to Pune’s vision of a zero-net carbon city.

The Legislative Council session also addressed other pressing urban issues, including illegal constructions and unauthorized plotting, which have become rampant due to rapid urban growth. Authorities have assured swift action to regulate these activities, with discussions already underway with the Revenue Minister to strengthen enforcement mechanisms. An expert in urban planning emphasized the need for a separate municipal corporation to manage the expanding suburban areas more effectively. “Current governance structures are stretched thin, and dedicated administration could lead to better resource management and urban planning,” the expert suggested. In addition to infrastructure projects, the session highlighted cultural initiatives, such as the proposal to establish a cancer hospital next to the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Cultural Hall. If a hospital proves unfeasible, a memorial dedicated to Dr. Ambedkar is suggested instead, to preserve Pune’s rich historical heritage. Moreover, the demand for a memorial for Dharmaveer Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj at Dharmaveergad has gained traction, drawing parallels with the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Memorial under construction at Sangameshwar.

As Pune continues its journey towards becoming a model city for sustainable urban living, the upcoming projects represent a strategic blend of modern infrastructure, environmental consciousness, and cultural preservation. The decisions taken in the upcoming meetings will shape the city’s trajectory for years to come. The focus on 24/7 water supply and road expansion not only addresses immediate civic challenges but also aligns with Pune’s commitment to creating eco-friendly, inclusive, and resilient urban spaces. These initiatives are expected to set a benchmark for other cities grappling with similar urbanisation challenges.
