Pune Traffic Police To Launch AI WhatsApp Chatbot For Violations

Pune is set to take a significant leap in urban traffic management as its Traffic Police prepare to roll out an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled WhatsApp chatbot to curb rampant violations. The system, which is undergoing trials this week, is designed to speed up the reporting and penalising of offenders, marking a decisive shift from traditional enforcement practices.

The AI-driven chatbot will allow citizens to directly participate in traffic governance by submitting photographic evidence of violations such as helmetless riding, triple-riding on two-wheelers, driving on the wrong side, speeding, illegal parking, and running red lights. Once uploaded, the chatbot will analyse the submissions, verify their accuracy, and issue fines if at least 80 per cent of the evidence is confirmed valid.

According to senior officials, this initiative follows earlier experiments with enforcement apps and AI-enabled cameras. However, the chatbot represents a more citizen-inclusive model, aimed at strengthening road discipline while reducing the burden on manual policing. By decentralising surveillance, the traffic department hopes to foster a culture of accountability on Pune’s increasingly congested roads.

Experts involved in the development of the system noted that engineering specialists are refining its algorithms to ensure fairness and avoid errors in identification. A recent trial demonstrated the chatbot’s potential, though minor technical issues are being addressed before the official launch, which is expected within the next three months. Once fully implemented, the system will automatically link violations with vehicle registration databases, reducing time and paperwork for both citizens and officers.

The move is being hailed as a progressive step towards building safer, more sustainable and equitable mobility in Pune. By blending AI with citizen engagement, the city could set a precedent for other metros grappling with similar urban traffic challenges. With growing concerns over rising vehicular emissions, congestion, and the vulnerability of pedestrians and cyclists, enforcement through technology can also support broader climate-friendly and inclusive mobility agendas.

Urban planners argue that integrating such digital tools into transport governance aligns with India’s long-term vision for smart, green, and sustainable cities. Encouraging behavioural change among motorists is critical not only for reducing accidents but also for cutting down unnecessary congestion that contributes to carbon emissions. Pune’s adoption of AI in traffic enforcement underscores how digital innovations can be repurposed for ecological and social benefits, rather than being limited to surveillance. If successful, the chatbot could transform the way traffic discipline is maintained, encouraging active citizen participation while making roads safer for all. It will also highlight the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring urban mobility systems are efficient, equitable, and environmentally sustainable.
