Despite having ample time before the flight’s take-off, the check-in counter had already closed, and they were denied boarding. This incident is not isolated; as more residents travel to and from the airport during peak hours, the possibility of missed flights has become a harsh reality for many.
Experts attribute this crisis to several factors, primarily the inadequate road infrastructure leading to the airport. Narrow roads, traffic bottlenecks, and the absence of fast, dedicated transport corridors are some of the primary causes of delays. Additionally, the public transportation options to the airport remain sparse and inefficient, with passengers relying on expensive and unreliable cabs or private vehicles. Vipul Alekar, a frequent flyer from Hadapsar, recounted another distressing story where he missed his flight despite leaving home hours ahead of his scheduled departure. With growing frustrations among passengers, there is an increasing call for more sustainable and efficient transport options to ensure timely arrivals at the airport.

Aviation expert Dhairyashil Vandekar suggests that one of the key solutions lies in extending metro connectivity up to Lohegaon Airport. Although the metro network currently terminates a few kilometres from the airport, a seamless connection to the airport could ease travel times significantly. The current lack of a speedy, economical, and reliable transit system to the airport adds to the growing frustration of commuters. Furthermore, it undermines Pune’s potential as a leading commercial and travel hub, especially in light of its rapidly increasing air traffic.
