Pune Traffic Authorities Raise Speed Limit To 40 Kmph On Navale Bridge

Pune city authorities have revised the maximum speed limit on the Navale Bridge stretch of the Katraj Dehu Road Bypass from 30 kmph to 40 kmph, following an extensive safety and traffic analysis. The original restriction was imposed after a tragic accident on November 13, 2025, which claimed eight lives and injured more than 20 others.

The Pune City Traffic Division conducted a detailed study assessing the structural integrity of the bridge, as well as patterns of vehicular flow, before implementing the revised limit. According to an official, the adjustment balances road safety considerations with efficient traffic movement, particularly during peak hours. The November 13 collision involved a truck that lost control and collided with multiple vehicles along the Katraj Bypass. In response, the Pune City Police initially enforced a 30 kmph speed cap to curb further incidents while investigations were ongoing. Following the analysis, authorities concluded that a moderate increase to 40 kmph would still maintain safety without compromising mobility.

A circular issued by the Pune City Traffic Branch outlined that the new speed limit applies from Bhumkar Bridge to the end of Navale Bridge, excluding emergency service vehicles such as fire brigades, police, and ambulances. The orders came into effect on December 4, 2025, nullifying previous speed restrictions along this stretch. Traffic officials emphasised the importance of compliance, warning that violators would be penalised under the Motor Vehicles Act. “We urge drivers to monitor their speedometers carefully and adhere to all posted traffic signs. Enforcement will be conducted using speed-gun systems and CCTV monitoring to ensure adherence,” stated a senior traffic officer.

Experts note that while increasing speed limits may seem counterintuitive after a serious accident, evidence-based traffic management often involves optimising limits based on road design, traffic density, and accident patterns. The city has also been working on additional measures, including improved signage, road surface upgrades, and stricter enforcement, to reduce accidents on high-traffic stretches. For Pune commuters, this adjustment is expected to improve traffic flow while maintaining a focus on safety. Officials continue to monitor road conditions and plan to conduct periodic reviews to align speed regulations with public safety objectives. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant, follow traffic rules, and report hazardous conditions promptly to help ensure safe and sustainable urban mobility.
