The city is moving closer to an integrated and commuter-friendly transport experience, with Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) and Pune Metro preparing to roll out a unified digital ticketing system. The initiative will enable passengers to buy tickets for both bus and metro services through a single platform, reducing dependence on multiple apps and long queues at ticket counters.
The breakthrough follows a collaborative decision by both transport authorities to integrate their ticketing systems by sharing their digital Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Once live, passengers using the PMPML mobile application will also have access to metro ticketing, while metro app users will be able to book bus tickets seamlessly.According to senior transport officials, technical teams from both sides are expected to finalise the rollout plan in the coming days. The system is projected to be operational within this year, marking a crucial step towards creating a connected and efficient public transport network for Pune’s growing population.

PMPML currently ferries an estimated 10 lakh passengers daily, while Pune Metro carries nearly 1 lakh commuters. This integration is expected to benefit over 11 lakh travellers by cutting travel complexities, saving time, and enhancing last-mile connectivity across the city. Officials believe that a unified system will also encourage more citizens to shift from private vehicles to public modes of travel, reducing congestion and the city’s carbon footprint.Industry experts highlight that digital integration of transport services is an essential step for sustainable urban mobility. A senior urban planner observed that such measures bring Indian cities closer to global benchmarks of eco-friendly and equitable transport systems, where buses and metro networks function as one cohesive service rather than competing alternatives.
The move is also aligned with Pune’s long-term vision of creating low-emission, accessible and technology-driven urban mobility. Officials stress that the success of this initiative could pave the way for a fully integrated multi-modal transport ecosystem in the city, where metro, buses, rickshaws, and other shared mobility options could one day function under a single digital umbrella. For commuters, the change promises greater convenience and predictability in planning daily journeys, particularly for those navigating interchanging routes between metro corridors and PMPML services. By eliminating the hassle of switching between ticketing platforms, Pune’s public transport aims to deliver a user-friendly experience that rivals private alternatives. If the rollout progresses smoothly, Pune could soon emerge as a leading model for other Indian cities working towards seamless, sustainable, and digital-first urban transport.
