The Union Budget 2024’s announcement of fourteen ‘Growth Hub’ cities across India marks a new era in regional development, with Pune, alongside Nagpur and Nashik, now joining the initial phase that included Mumbai, Surat, Visakhapatnam, and Varanasi. Pune’s inherent strengths, including a thriving Information Technology sector, expanding metro connectivity, established industrial corridors, and world-class educational and healthcare facilities, position it as a prime candidate for this prestigious designation. The economic growth strategy, meticulously crafted by YASHADA, will be overseen by the Divisional Commissioner, with implementation driven by municipal corporations, PMRDA, and other key agencies, ensuring a coordinated approach to urban evolution.
Economically, Pune’s trajectory is set for exponential growth. With a current Gross Regional Product of ₹4.2 lakh crore, projections indicate the creation of an astounding 15 to 18 lakh new jobs by 2030. Crucially, at least 6 lakh of these opportunities are specifically earmarked for women workers, making Pune the first city in India to adopt such a comprehensive and gender-inclusive economic development strategy.
