Pune Railway Station is poised for a transformative overhaul as part of the Indian Railways’ Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aiming to modernise key stations across India.
The redevelopment plan includes the addition of four new platforms to the existing six, enhancing the station’s capacity to handle increasing passenger traffic and improving overall operational efficiency . The station’s upgrade is part of a broader initiative encompassing six key railway stations in the Pune division: Pune Junction, Hadapsar, Khadki, Shivajinagar, Uruli Kanchan, and Alandi. These stations are in the final stages of their upgrade plans, which aim to provide world-class facilities and amenities to passengers
In addition to infrastructure enhancements, two new express train services have been inaugurated: the Hadapsar–Jodhpur Express and the MGR Chennai Central–Bhagat Ki Kothi Express. These services are expected to improve regional connectivity and provide more travel options for passengers . Discussions are also underway for the introduction of a high-speed Vande Bharat Express service connecting Pune and Nagpur. This service aims to significantly reduce travel time between the two cities, addressing the current lengthy journey durations and improving passenger comfort .
Furthermore, trial runs have commenced for the Pune–Nashik railway corridor, which holds strategic importance due to its potential to enhance connectivity in the region. The new alignment for this corridor has been carefully planned to avoid interference with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), ensuring that scientific research activities remain unaffected . To alleviate congestion around Pune Railway Station, authorities have enforced a no-parking rule within a 200-metre radius of the station. This measure aims to ease traffic flow and improve accessibility for passengers. Public feedback on this new traffic rule is being solicited until May 17, 2025, allowing citizens to voice their opinions and suggestions
These comprehensive developments reflect a concerted effort to modernise Pune’s railway infrastructure, enhance passenger experience, and support the city’s growing transportation needs. The integration of advanced facilities and services aligns with the broader goal of creating sustainable and efficient urban transit systems.
