Pune Set to Get 1000 Electric Buses Under PM E-Drive Scheme

The Centre has approved the allocation of 1,000 electric buses to Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) under Phase II of the PM E-Drive Scheme, signalling a significant upgrade to sustainable urban mobility in the city. Officials said the move aims to modernise public transport, reduce carbon emissions, and improve commuting efficiency across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The approval follows a formal request from PMPML and the Maharashtra government’s submission of a Direct Debit Mandate to the Reserve Bank of India, as confirmed in communication from the Union Minister for Heavy Industries. Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), the designated implementing agency, will now manage the tendering and procurement of the electric buses in compliance with technical and operational specifications outlined under the scheme. Currently, PMPML operates approximately 2,000 buses, of which around 750 are owned directly and the remainder run through contractors. With urban expansion driving growing commuter demand, officials estimate that the city requires at least 3,000 buses to maintain efficient service levels. The addition of 1,000 electric buses will nearly close this gap, while delivering environmentally friendly transport solutions.

The PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-Drive) scheme aims to accelerate adoption of zero-emission public transport options nationwide. Experts note that cities like Pune, which face heavy traffic and air pollution, stand to gain both operational and environmental benefits from large-scale electrification of municipal bus fleets. “Electric buses reduce reliance on fossil fuels, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and offer quieter, more comfortable travel for commuters,” an urban mobility specialist said. Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol described the development as a “big gift to Punekars,” highlighting that the initiative stems from coordinated efforts between state and central authorities. He added that the new fleet will improve service efficiency, support operational modernisation, and promote sustainable commuting practices for the city’s rapidly growing population.

The move is expected to bolster Pune’s green transport ambitions and align with national objectives of achieving net zero carbon emissions in urban mobility. Officials confirmed that the detailed allocation letter and tender schedule will be shared with PMPML and Maharashtra authorities shortly, marking the next step in deploying the electric fleet. By integrating electric vehicles into its transport network, Pune is set to become a benchmark for sustainable urban transit, demonstrating how technology-driven public transport initiatives can support climate-conscious city planning while improving everyday commuter experience.
