Pune has emerged as Maharashtra’s leading city in new Covid-19 cases this week, logging 48 fresh infections in a single day. Maharashtra’s active Covid-19 caseload has reached 112, driven by fresh infections emerging across urban pockets, with Pune and Mumbai contributing significantly. On Thursday, Mumbai logged 25 new cases, while Pune Municipal Corporation reported 48, the highest single-day tally in the state. According to public health officials, most new infections have presented with only mild, flu-like symptoms and none of the patients has required hospitalisation so far.
Officials say the current trend is not entirely unexpected, as seasonal changes and increased public movement often correlate with minor surges. However, what stands out in this instance is a noticeable shift in the pattern of urban outbreaks. Until the end of May, Mumbai consistently topped daily case counts. The latest numbers suggest Pune may now be emerging as a new hotspot, raising concerns about localised clusters of transmission.The rise comes even as the state continues to mourn 21 Covid-linked fatalities recorded since mid-May.
Four of these deaths were reported from Mumbai alone. According to experts, the individuals who succumbed to the virus had significant underlying health conditions, including diabetes and cardiovascular ailments, further amplifying the vulnerability of elderly citizens.With global monitoring agencies tracking emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2, state officials confirmed they are closely observing all reported infections for any signs of new mutations.
