Pune’s long-awaited connectivity to Europe is finally on the horizon, with the runway extension at Pune Airport officially underway. This infrastructure upgrade is expected to allow direct long-haul flights to European destinations by 2026, eliminating the need for flyers to travel via Mumbai or Delhi for intercontinental routes.
The ongoing expansion work is part of a larger aviation vision for western Maharashtra. The short length of the existing runway has long hindered the airport’s ability to handle wide-bodied aircraft such as the Boeing 777 or Airbus A330—both of which are typically required for non-stop international flights. With the extension in progress, Pune Airport is positioning itself to become a more globally connected gateway. A total of nearly 300 acres is being acquired to facilitate the runway extension, with the funding being shared across multiple public bodies. The Maharashtra government will contribute 60% of the project cost, while Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will pitch in 20% and 10% respectively. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) will also bear 10% of the cost, indicating strong regional collaboration for a shared vision of enhanced air connectivity.
According to senior officials in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the expansion is expected to be completed within 18 months. Once operational, the extended runway will enable direct flights from Pune to key European cities like Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and London, placing Pune on the global air travel map and significantly easing the burden on flyers from the city and nearby industrial hubs. The move is being welcomed not only by passengers but also by the local business community, which has long demanded seamless international connectivity to cater to rising travel demand, particularly in sectors such as information technology, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. The existing dependency on Mumbai airport for long-haul travel often means increased travel time, costs, and logistical hassles.
The runway extension is also aligned with a broader aviation upgrade strategy for the Pune region. Parallel to this project, the much-delayed international airport planned at Purandar is reportedly gaining renewed momentum. Officials confirm that the site has now been finalised and land acquisition is underway. Once operational, the Purandar Airport will relieve pressure from Pune Airport while offering a modern international hub tailored to future traffic volumes and global connectivity requirements. In the interim, Pune Airport is also witnessing a significant transformation in its terminal infrastructure. The newly developed terminal building is now fully operational, and all passenger operations have shifted there. Work has begun on redeveloping the old terminal to match the newer facility’s modern standards and operational efficiency.
Aviation experts state that the combination of a longer runway and new terminal infrastructure will help Pune handle greater passenger volumes while accommodating international airlines looking to add Pune to their network. In recent years, the city has emerged as a significant economic and talent hub, prompting calls for better direct air connectivity to global financial centres. At present, Pune Airport connects to 35 domestic destinations and just three international ones—Dubai, Singapore, and Bangkok. The lack of long-haul flights has long been viewed as a bottleneck to Pune’s global aspirations, especially as outbound travel for work, study, and tourism continues to surge post-pandemic.
Regular flyers and travel agents alike have expressed optimism about the expansion project. Many say that direct Europe-bound flights from Pune would reduce their travel fatigue and enhance the city’s positioning as a globally competitive destination. The business community is also expected to benefit from more efficient cargo and passenger movement, especially in industries that rely on global timelines and partnerships. Regional planners and sustainability advocates have also praised the development, provided environmental compliance is ensured. With air travel demand growing steadily, infrastructure expansion is necessary but must be balanced with ecological responsibility. Officials have assured that appropriate environmental clearances and mitigation efforts are being incorporated in both the runway and terminal works.
The integration of Pune Airport’s runway expansion with the larger regional aviation framework—particularly the proposed Purandar Airport—shows a calibrated approach to urban planning. The intention is not just to add flights but to design a system capable of managing future growth sustainably. Once completed, the runway extension is expected to redefine Pune’s role in India’s aviation sector—elevating it from a domestic node to a truly international hub. With timelines on track and government departments working in tandem, direct Europe flights from Pune could soon be a reality.
