Pune Region To Frame New Economic Roadmap Through NITI Aayog Growth Hub Plan

The Pune Metropolitan Region is set to receive a comprehensive economic roadmap as authorities begin work on a long-term development strategy under the national Growth Hub initiative. The plan, being steered by the metropolitan development authority with support from NITI Aayog, aims to guide economic expansion across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and surrounding growth corridors while embedding sustainability and social inclusion into future investments.

According to officials, the proposed roadmap will define the strategic sectors expected to anchor the region’s economy over the next decade. Information technology, education, tourism, global capability centres, advanced manufacturing and green energy are expected to be among the priority focus areas. The plan will also assess market potential, employment patterns and investment needs for each sector, creating a structured view of how the region can remain competitive while building a resilient and low-carbon economy. The Pune Metropolitan Region is the second urban cluster in Maharashtra to develop such a framework, following the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s economic blueprint. Urban planners said that adopting a similar approach could help Pune diversify its economic base, reduce dependence on a few dominant industries and promote balanced, equitable growth across multiple urban nodes.

As part of the exercise, between six and eight development centres are likely to be identified within the metropolitan region. These would act as geographic anchors for infrastructure, housing, industrial clusters and social amenities. Planned investment areas—including an Aerocity hub, specialised industrial clusters and major mobility projects such as ring roads—will also be integrated into the economic vision. Officials noted that upcoming waste-to-energy facilities and green infrastructure proposals would play an important role in supporting sustainable growth. The development authority will appoint consultants to carry out detailed surveys and socio-economic assessments. Their work will include examining income distribution, workforce participation, gender ratios, educational access, health infrastructure and demographics. An official said that this evidence-based approach would help shape policies that support inclusive growth rather than infrastructure-led expansion alone.

Consultants will also be tasked with evaluating the region’s current productivity levels, investment flows and long-term financial requirements. The resulting plan will outline the likely economic impact over the next five years, enabling the authority to prioritise climate-resilient infrastructure and employment-generating projects. Officials involved in the process said the roadmap represents an important shift towards planned, future-ready regional development. A senior administrator noted that the initiative is intended to “guide long-term economic choices and help accelerate sectors that can generate sustainable and equitable growth for the metropolitan region.”

The final strategy is expected to provide a framework for coordinated public and private investment, ensuring that the Pune region’s rapid urbanisation is matched with balanced, environmentally conscious and socially inclusive development.
