Pune: In a significant move towards enhancing urban green spaces, the State Government’s Department of Environment and Climate Change has granted ₹8.5 crore to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and ₹10.2 crore to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) under the Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan scheme. This funding aims to support various greenspace development projects across these regions. Both municipal corporations had submitted comprehensive project proposals in June, highlighting the need for increased green cover and sustainable development in response to rapid urbanisation and associated challenges.
The head of the PMC garden department’s state government projects division expressed optimism about the initiative. “We will now start the tendering process and complete works soon,” he stated. He further elaborated on the urgency of the project, citing the adverse effects of construction, IT development, and water scarcity on the region’s green cover. The initiative will focus on planting indigenous trees and shrubs to create urban forests, with the allocated funds also covering maintenance for three years to ensure their survival and growth. A biodiversity park at survey no. 1 in Talawade, encompassing provisions for water percolation and stormwater restoration. Installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and on-grid solar panel systems at the park, with a total budget of ₹9.8 crore. An additional ₹40 lakh dedicated to information and awareness programmes.
These projects are expected to significantly enhance the urban green spaces in both Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, addressing the environmental impact of rapid urbanisation and improving the quality of life for residents. The incorporation of sustainable energy solutions, such as on-grid solar panel systems, further underscores the state’s commitment to promoting eco-friendly practices. The Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan scheme, under which these grants have been allocated, aims to foster environmental stewardship and sustainability through various green initiatives. The focus on planting indigenous species and developing urban forests aligns with broader efforts to combat climate change and promote biodiversity. This substantial funding boost is a testament to the state’s proactive approach towards environmental conservation and sustainable urban development. As the projects move forward, they are expected to set a benchmark for similar initiatives across the country, demonstrating the potential for integrating green spaces within rapidly growing urban landscapes.
