Pune Railway Station to Implement Advanced Communication Recording System

Pune railway division is set to introduce a new communication recording system aimed at significantly enhancing safety and operational efficiency across its network. This initiative involves the installation of an advanced Very High Frequency (VHF) radio communication system at Pune railway station and other critical locations, including the yard, control room, and various level crossings. The system will log all essential exchanges related to train movement between railway personnel, such as station masters, yard managers, loco pilots, and guards, ensuring a comprehensive record of operational dialogue.

The approved system will operate on frequencies between 30 and 300 megahertz, facilitating real-time, clearer, and faster communication among staff. Crucially, all interactions will be recorded, with data retained for up to three months. This feature is designed to provide vital evidence for investigations in the event of an accident, operational failure, or emergency, thereby improving accountability and analysis. The Pune division had submitted this proposal to the Railway Board, which has now granted its approval for the project, estimated to cost around ₹5 crore, with installation expected to commence in the coming weeks.

Officials anticipate that the VHF system will drastically improve communication capabilities, particularly during emergencies like derailments, natural disasters, or technical faults. For the first time, a verifiable record of critical instructions and exchanges between frontline staff will be available, aiding in reducing response times and identifying any lapses in coordination or protocol. The system will utilize wireless VHF radio sets issued to key personnel, activating and recording communication automatically when a train enters a zone within 5 to 15 kilometres of a station. Existing walkie-talkie sets used by station staff will also be upgraded as part of this comprehensive safety enhancement.

This technological upgrade represents a significant step towards a more robust and responsive railway network, directly contributing to passenger safety and efficient operations. By providing verifiable data, it ensures greater accountability and enables swift, informed responses to any incident, enhancing the overall resilience of the railway system.
