Pune power outage on February 6 to impact key areas
Residents across Pune’s key localities, including Shivajinagar, Aundh, Laxmi Road, and Deccan, will experience a power outage on February 6 as critical infrastructure upgrades are carried out for the Pune Metro and Maharashtra’s Electric Power Transmission System (MahaTransco). The electricity supply will be suspended from 8 AM to 4 PM to facilitate essential maintenance work on high-voltage transmission lines along the Shivajinagar to Hinjawadi corridor. With the city’s electricity grid under increasing pressure due to rapid urban expansion, these scheduled interruptions highlight the need for ongoing infrastructure investments to support Pune’s growing energy demands. The affected areas include major residential and commercial hubs such as Model Colony, Ganeshkhind, Ghole Road, FC Road, and Janata Vasahat, causing potential disruptions to businesses and daily life.
The power shutdown is expected to impact thousands of households, offices, and commercial establishments, particularly in densely populated areas like Vetalbaba Chowk, Modern College, and Apte Road. MSEDCL, the state electricity distributor, has urged residents to make necessary arrangements and has sent SMS notifications to affected consumers. “These upgrades are crucial to ensuring a more stable and efficient power supply in the future,” an MSEDCL official stated. However, concerns persist among local shopkeepers and small businesses that rely heavily on uninterrupted electricity for digital transactions, refrigeration, and customer service. While large corporations may have backup power solutions, small businesses, which form the backbone of Pune’s economy, could suffer revenue losses due to the outage.
Beyond the immediate inconvenience, the power shutdown underscores a broader sustainability challenge. With Pune’s energy needs surging due to increasing urbanisation and industrial activity, infrastructure upgrades like these are essential for reducing transmission losses and improving grid efficiency.
