Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is set to construct a 50-kilometre cement-concrete road aligned with the Pune Metro Line 3 corridor. The planned stretch will run between Maan in Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar, closely mirroring the Metro’s elevated route.
The new road, which will use cement-concrete instead of traditional bitumen, is part of a broader strategy to create resilient infrastructure that complements Pune’s multi-modal urban transit framework. Officials said the choice of concrete will ensure longer durability, reduce annual maintenance costs, and withstand monsoonal damage—issues that have plagued Pune’s arterial routes for decades. This initiative coincides with the construction of Pune Metro Line 3, which will connect the city centre with its major IT and commercial hub in Hinjewadi. The road project is expected to significantly reduce congestion, cut travel time, and support more sustainable urban commuting patterns. According to PMRDA officials, the corridor will also improve last-mile connectivity and act as a feeder to the Metro system, encouraging a modal shift away from private vehicles.
Beyond physical connectivity, the concrete road is seen as a catalyst for economic growth along the transit corridor. It is expected to improve accessibility to key employment clusters and unlock real estate development potential in the intermediate zones. Experts involved in the planning have stated that the road has been designed keeping in mind minimal environmental disruption, especially along sensitive sections. The road project is being developed in close coordination with several civic and infrastructure bodies to ensure seamless integration with ongoing urban projects, drainage lines, and service corridors. PMRDA has committed to adhering to sustainability and safety standards, including provisions for proper stormwater management and pedestrian infrastructure wherever feasible.
With Pune’s urban population expanding rapidly and vehicle density rising, the city’s transport authorities are under pressure to deliver integrated, future-ready solutions. The concrete road initiative not only addresses longstanding commuter pain points but also aligns with national ambitions for greener, more inclusive infrastructure. Metro Line 3 itself is expected to be a game-changer, reducing emissions and traffic loads in one of the city’s most vital corridors. While the timelines for the road’s completion are yet to be finalised, officials affirmed that the project will be synchronised with the progress of the Metro Line 3 rollout. For Pune, this signals a shift from reactive urban planning to proactive, interconnected infrastructure development.
