Pune PMPML App Earns ₹20.85 Crore in Five Months Through Mobile Ticketing

Pune’s public transport ecosystem has taken a significant leap forward with the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) launching its mobile app, Apli PMPML. The app, which was introduced in August 2024, has become an overwhelming success, both in terms of user adoption and revenue generation. In just five months, the app has recorded impressive figures, with 1.17 crore passengers utilising the platform, leading to the sale of 69.42 lakh tickets and 24.23 lakh passes, accumulating a total revenue of ₹20.85 crore. These numbers reflect not only the growing comfort of passengers but also the increasing efficiency of Pune’s public transport system, which caters to a large and diverse urban population.

Nitin Narvekar, Joint Managing Director at PMPML, credited the app’s success to its user-centric features designed to enhance passenger convenience. The app’s functionalities include real-time bus tracking, online ticket and pass bookings, as well as an integrated platform for lodging service-related complaints. Narvekar highlighted the continuous increase in users, with monthly app usage surging by 4 to 6 lakh passengers. This surge in adoption has led to monthly revenue growth of ₹1.5 crore to ₹2 crore, underscoring the app’s effectiveness in driving both operational efficiency and revenue for PMPML.

PMPML’s Digital Revolution in Urban Mobility

The revenue generated from Apli PMPML has been incremental but also reflective of broader urban mobility trends. In the first month of its launch, the app sold 2.50 lakh tickets and passes, generating ₹67.62 lakh. This was followed by significant growth in the subsequent months. By September, the app recorded sales of 12.24 lakh tickets and passes, bringing in ₹2.97 crore, while October saw an even greater surge with 18.67 lakh tickets sold, generating ₹4.20 crore in revenue. The app’s success continued into November, with 16.28 lakh tickets sold, generating ₹3.61 crore, and December saw a spike to 22 lakh tickets, translating to ₹4.73 crore in revenue. As of January 27, the app has sold over 21.94 lakh tickets, contributing ₹4.64 crore to the total earnings.

This consistent performance highlights how mobile technology can be harnessed to enhance the efficiency and profitability of public transport systems. The app’s ability to cater to the rising demand for streamlined, contactless travel options is a clear indicator of shifting preferences in urban mobility. As Pune’s transportation network continues to modernise, Apli PMPML offers a glimpse into the future of urban mobility, where technology, accessibility, and sustainability intersect to create a more efficient and user-friendly service for passengers.

Sustainability and the Role of Technology in Public Transport

While the economic benefits of the Apli PMPML app are evident, its role in promoting sustainable transport practices is equally significant. By reducing the reliance on paper-based tickets and facilitating seamless, contactless transactions, the app plays an important role in reducing waste and supporting eco-friendly practices in Pune’s public transport system. The real-time tracking feature not only improves the user experience but also optimises bus schedules and routes, ensuring that buses run more efficiently and with fewer delays. This reduction in waiting times contributes to fuel savings, better air quality, and an overall decrease in the carbon footprint of urban commuting.

Moreover, the app’s widespread adoption is contributing to the city’s broader sustainability goals by promoting the use of public transport over private vehicles. With congestion and pollution levels steadily increasing in Pune, encouraging more people to use public transport is vital to curbing urban environmental issues. The app is a tool that enables better management of this transition by making public transport more accessible, affordable, and reliable, aligning with the city’s long-term sustainability strategy to reduce pollution and traffic congestion.

Building a Smart, Connected Urban Future with Public Transport

The growing success of Apli PMPML offers a compelling case for how digital transformation can improve civic infrastructure and urban governance. Pune’s adoption of this app shows the potential for other cities to implement similar systems that streamline access to services while promoting efficient use of resources. The app’s ease of use, combined with real-time tracking and ticket booking features, sets a new standard for urban mobility solutions in India.

The app also addresses the rising demand for tech-enabled solutions in everyday life. With its launch, PMPML has taken a major step towards the future of urban mobility, where public transport is not just a utility but a smart, connected experience for all users. With the launch of the iOS version of Apli PMPML on Republic Day 2025, the app’s reach will extend even further, offering greater accessibility to a broader demographic. This multi-platform availability ensures that more passengers can benefit from the enhanced convenience and operational efficiency that the app provides.

As Pune’s transportation system continues to evolve, the integration of technology into public services will play an increasingly crucial role in shaping the city’s future. The success of Apli PMPML serves as a blueprint for other cities across India to modernise their own public transport networks, driving growth, sustainability, and improved quality of life for residents.
