Pune Nashik Semi High Speed Rail DPR Finalized To Boost Growth And Protect GMRT
In Pune, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Pune-Ahilyanagar-Shirdi-Nashik semi high-speed rail corridor has been finalized by Central Railway. This pivotal development, now moving towards submission to the Railway Ministry, is set to significantly transform connectivity and foster industrial and agricultural growth across the region, aligning with sustainable development goals.
Despite initial local demands for a different alignment, Central Railway engineers proceeded with a new route after comprehensive surveys. The updated plan runs parallel to the current highway from Pune to Ahilyanagar and introduces a fresh alignment from Shirdi to Nashik. While this new 235-kilometer route may extend travel time between Pune and Nashik by approximately 45 minutes, officials noted it strategically bypasses major impediments.
A crucial factor necessitating the new alignment was the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at Khodad, Junnar, a globally significant research project. To ensure the GMRT project remains undisturbed, the Railway Minister had directed the preparation of a new DPR in January. The revised alignment has been meticulously planned to either pass over or tunnel beneath sensitive areas, minimizing disruption to both the scientific facility and local landowners. A Member of Parliament emphasized the corridor’s importance for industrial growth and agricultural transport.
The semi high-speed rail project carries an estimated cost of ₹16,000 crore and is designed for speeds of 200 kilometers per hour. Expected to be completed within three and a half years, the corridor will feature 24 stations, including 13 major and 11 minor stops, promising enhanced accessibility.
With the DPR now complete and undergoing final review, this ambitious project moves closer to realization. It promises to transform regional transport, creating a more sustainable, efficient, and interconnected economic corridor for Maharashtra.
