The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather alerts for several districts in Maharashtra, including Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Ahmednagar, and Aurangabad, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next four days.
The IMD has placed Pune district under an orange alert for May 26 and 27, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall as the southwest monsoon advances into parts of Maharashtra. A yellow alert has been announced for May 28 and 29, suggesting continued but less intense rainfall. The early onset of the southwest monsoon, arriving in Maharashtra 10 days ahead of schedule, has led to significant weather disturbances across the state. This premature arrival is one of the few instances since 1960 of May arrivals, last recorded in 2006.
In Kolhapur, the IMD forecasts extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places on May 27. Moderate rain is expected on May 28, followed by light to moderate rain on May 29 and 30. Satara district is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (50-60 kmph) at isolated places on May 27. Light to moderate rain is anticipated on May 28 and 29, with light rain at isolated places on May 30.
Sangli and Solapur districts are expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) at isolated places on May 27. Light rain at isolated places is forecasted for May 28 to 30. Aurangabad is predicted to have thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) at isolated places from May 27 to 29. Light rain at isolated places is expected on May 30.
Ahmednagar is also likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) at isolated places on May 27. Light rain at isolated places is forecasted for May 28 to 30. Residents in these districts are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions during this period of intense weather activity. The IMD continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
