Pune Nashik Industrial Corridor Alignment With Rail Route Deemed Unfeasible By MSRDC

Pune, Maharashtra’s State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has officially dismissed the proposal to align the forthcoming Pune-Nashik industrial corridor with the existing semi-high-speed rail line. The decision stems from a detailed report submitted by MSRDC, citing insurmountable technical and financial constraints that render the alternative alignment unfeasible. This determination comes despite the state government’s directive to explore such realignment, which was intended to mitigate mounting opposition from farmers and landowners along the original 213-kilometre highway route, thereby easing land acquisition challenges.

MSRDC’s report highlighted that the fundamental purposes of the two infrastructures are incompatible. The rail project is designed for rapid intercity travel, whereas the industrial corridor aims to connect multiple towns, villages, and industrial zones. Regulatory buffer zones around railway lines would make it nearly impossible to construct an expressway alongside, and the cost associated with such co-location would be prohibitively high. The original alignment, approved last year, includes a 135 km stretch from Pune to Shirdi, a 52 km section linking Shirdi to Niphad (connecting to the Surat-Chennai Expressway), and an 18 km segment to Nashik.

MSRDC maintains that adhering to the pre-approved route remains the only viable option for this crucial project. The final decision to proceed with the next phase now rests with the state government, which is yet to provide its formal approval. This corridor is a vital component of MSRDC’s expansive 4,200-kilometre network, anticipated to significantly reduce travel time between Pune and Nashik from five hours to approximately 2.5 hours, fostering regional economic growth and improved connectivity.

This development underscores the complex challenges in urban planning and infrastructure execution, particularly concerning land acquisition and integrated development. A decisive state government action is crucial to advance this vital corridor, ensuring improved regional connectivity and fostering economic growth, while addressing community concerns.
