Pune Municipal Corporation Starts Bavdhan Chandni Chowk Road Repair To Ensure Safer Commute

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated corrective works on a hazardous stretch of Chandni Chowk road in Bavdhan Khurd, aiming to reduce accident risks and improve local traffic flow. The steep gradient on Survey No. 20, Gali No. 1, has long been a safety concern for motorists and residents, prompting city authorities to act under the broader Pune City Traffic Improvement Project.

During a site inspection on Friday, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Special) Omprakash Divate directed the Roads Department to widen the road to its full sanctioned width and implement slope reduction measures. Officials were also instructed to assess the status of adjoining connecting roads and expedite any pending land acquisition necessary for comprehensive road development. “Once land parcels are acquired, the road can be fully upgraded, which will significantly reduce accident frequency and create an alternative route connecting Bavdhan to the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway,” an official said. The project is expected to enhance traffic management, provide smoother vehicular movement, and strengthen urban mobility in the area.

Local residents have cautiously welcomed the initiative. One Bavdhan Khurd resident remarked, “We want the solution, not just promises. This stretch is notorious for accidents, so we hope the work is completed promptly.” Another resident from Bavdhan Budruk emphasised, “For months we have followed up with authorities. It is reassuring that PMC has finally acted to correct this dangerous slope.” Senior citizens in the area expressed similar optimism. “The slope and traffic conditions posed real hazards,” said a resident of Chandni Chowk. “We are looking forward to safer roads, reduced congestion, and smoother travel.”

The PMC’s intervention reflects a growing focus on proactive urban planning, road safety, and citizen-centric infrastructure in Pune. By addressing the steep gradient and enhancing connectivity, the project not only mitigates accident risks but also supports more sustainable and equitable mobility solutions for residents. The corrective measures align with broader city objectives to foster safer, zero-carbon, and inclusive urban transport corridors. Authorities have committed to monitoring progress closely and keeping residents informed of updates. Once completed, the Chandni Chowk road enhancement is expected to serve as a model for addressing hazardous urban stretches across Pune, blending practical engineering solutions with sustainable urban planning principles.
