Pune Mumbai Expressway Faces Severe Traffic Congestion on Holiday Weekend

The Pune Mumbai Expressway, a vital corridor connecting Maharashtra’s two major cities, faced severe traffic congestion during the Maharashtra Day holiday weekend. Commuters reported a 5-kilometre-long traffic jam at the Bor Ghat section, leading to hours of delays for vehicles heading towards Pune.

According to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the expressway typically accommodates around 60,000 vehicles daily. However, during peak holiday periods, this number can surge to over 100,000, overwhelming the existing infrastructure. The Bor Ghat section, known for its steep gradients and sharp curves, becomes particularly susceptible to bottlenecks, especially when heavy vehicles struggle to navigate the terrain.

In response to these recurring issues, MSRDC initiated the ‘missing link’ project, aiming to bypass the challenging ghat section. This project involves constructing a 13-kilometre stretch featuring tunnels and a cable-stayed bridge, which is expected to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune by approximately 30 minutes. The project, originally slated for completion in 2022, has faced delays due to various challenges, including the complexity of the terrain and unforeseen technical issues. As of now, MSRDC has set a revised completion target for June 2025. Once operational, this new route will provide a more direct and efficient path, alleviating pressure on the existing expressway and enhancing safety for all commuters. In the interim, alternative authorities have urged travelers to plan their journeys during off-peak hours and consider routes when possible. Additionally, ongoing maintenance and monitoring efforts are being intensified to manage traffic flow effectively and minimize disruptions.

The completion of the ‘missing link’ project is anticipated to significantly improve the travel experience for commuters, reduce the environmental impact of prolonged vehicle emissions, and contribute to the overall efficiency of the Pune Mumbai Expressway. As the holiday season approaches, stakeholders remain hopeful that the project’s timely completion will mitigate future congestion issues and enhance the sustainability of this crucial transport corridor.
