Pune Metro to Add 15 New Trains for Better Connectivity

Pune Metro is set to add 15 new trains—comprising 45 coaches—to its existing fleet to improve service frequency and reduce crowding. This move follows approval of two new metro corridors that will soon be operational. The expansion is designed to meet growing commuter demand and enhance daily connectivity for Pune’s fast-expanding population.

Currently, Pune Metro runs 34 trains with 102 coaches, carrying over 1.7 lakh passengers daily. With the addition of 15 new trains, the fleet will expand to 49 trains and 147 coaches. Officials confirmed the expansion is part of preparations for two newly approved routes. The move is expected to cut waiting times and provide better service during peak hours, especially across the city’s busiest corridors.

The metro plans to gradually reduce train frequency from 7 minutes to 5 minutes and eventually 3 minutes during high-demand hours. Authorities have issued work orders for the procurement of the 15 trains, each made up of three coaches. Delivery is expected within two years. The upgraded system is also designed to allow future expansion of existing trains from three to six coaches based on passenger demand.

Pune Metro officials said the rising ridership has driven the need for more trains. Efforts are underway to further increase commuter numbers through enhanced feeder services. The newly sanctioned routes—Swargate to Katraj and PCMC to Nigdi—received central government clearance last year. The detailed project reports for both include budget allocations for new trains, which aim to match the expected ridership of 3.5 lakh commuters in the coming years.

Line 2 (Vanaz to Ramwadi) continues to outperform Line 1 (PCMC to Swargate) in ridership, with nearly 26 lakh passengers recorded in June. Metro authorities believe the additional trains will ease congestion and improve travel experience, especially during early morning and evening rush hours. With new infrastructure coming online and a larger fleet in service, Pune Metro is poised to become the city’s backbone for daily transit.

Pune Metro’s decision to expand its fleet with 15 new trains signals a major boost in the city’s urban transport capabilities. As new corridors and rising ridership reshape mobility demands, these enhancements will improve travel comfort and service efficiency. Commuters can expect shorter wait times and smoother journeys, reinforcing metro travel as a preferred daily choice.
