With Phase I of the Pune Metro nearing full completion, the city’s metro network is set to expand significantly under the approved Phase II project, bringing key new corridors to Wagholi, Chandni Chowk, and beyond.
The Maharashtra Government greenlit the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase II in October 2024. The new phase proposes an extension of the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor to Chandni Chowk and Wagholi, respectively. These proposals await final clearance from the Central Government. The expansion marks a major step forward in Pune’s urban transit strategy. Phase II includes a 25.8 km line from Khadakwasla to Kharadi via Swargate and Hadapsar. With an estimated cost of ₹8,131 crore, this corridor will have 22 stations, 14 of which will be elevated. Another 6 km corridor is planned from Nal Stop to Manik Baug through Warje, expected to cost ₹1,765 crore and include six stations. Design work for the new stations is already underway, with authorities focusing on aesthetics, functionality, and green infrastructure.
All stations will incorporate solar energy systems and aim for high ratings under the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) guidelines. Technical drawings and interconnectivity features are being developed in advance to streamline future construction. Officials say that early design and planning will reduce delays and improve efficiency during implementation. The Executive Director of Pune Metro emphasised the long-term cost and time benefits of front-loaded planning. In addition to physical expansion, the Pune Metro is working to boost non-fare revenue by developing commercial spaces at metro stations. Plans include adding additional floors to optimise real estate and support the project’s financial viability. Looking ahead, DPRs are also being drafted for future connections, including new lines from Kharadi to Pune Airport and a spur line to Kondhwa. These additions aim to further integrate the metro system with key residential and commercial zones in the city.
With sustainability, smart design, and last-mile connectivity at its core, Pune Metro Phase II represents a decisive move towards modernising public transport and easing pressure on the city’s roads.
